throwback track of the week. for the sake of science, i recently signed up for billboard.biz to gain access to weekly top charts, namely the hot rap/r&b songs from ten years ago. other than for my own edification, it’s for a personal project i’m working on which IM SURE you will be interested in. i’ve been spending many nights just looking at old charts from 97-00, and it’s pretty cool remembering a lot of those songs. so anxious was hot ten years ago! in fact this week ten years ago, it was #13 on hot rap/r&b songs. #1 was we can’t be friends, which i really don’t even remember, like at all.. other songs of note this week ten years ago:

u know whats up (which was INCREDIBLY huge – 49 weeks on the charts, goddamn donnel! rip lisa left-eye!)
heartbreaker (i think around now mariah had already fully lost her innocence – started with honey, check always be my baby which came out the year before. still on the girl next door tip. i liked the remix better, also)
vivrant thing (which i have to add to my b&w hip hop video list! snap!)

anyway, these billboard charts are a whole lot of fun to look at. ten years ago. shits nuts.

+ i am lacking a halloween costume. very bummed about this. last year i did lots of prep in building my kji costume and a good time was had by all. this year though, all my costume ideas require more than just the solo tip, or moreso on the spending tip. first i wanted to be king jaffe joffer, but that would require me to find a very large plush lion i could gut out and turn into a shawl-type of thing. that was gonna get expensive. then i was thinking boyz II men from motownphilly video, but i didnt know three other people with excess melanin that would be down. was also thinking of the turtleneck guy from omc, but my hair is not quite long or slicked back enough to pull it off.. however today may prove fruitful- my friend suggested doing characters from sketches on All That, which would lead to some good group costumes. earboy, pizzaface, pierre escargot, randy & mandy, baggin saggin barry.. all really good looks! i’ll see who i can convince to team up with me – if they’re in the same boat and have not decided on a costume yet either. even if not, i could probably solo a baggin saggin barry pretty easy breezy beautifully.

+ a meme i enjoyed a lot back in the day was the ‘Soundtrack To My Life’ meme, you’ve probably seen it on myspace bulletins or livejournals or facebook notes or what have you – you’d basically pick a song for each scene of your life movie. it would take hours to pick songs and they had to match the mood perfectly, and more often than not you’d give reasons as to why the song as chosen for that certain scene – it was truly musical nerdery and elitism at its finest. i got to thinking about it all over again, and felt like i needed to redo it – but as with a lot of the mixes ive made, i wanted to theme this one as well, so i redid the soundtrack to my life with all funk/disco. this shit took me the better part of this week, but all the effort worth it! (no, not really)
