bobby marchan – something on your mind. i heard this pop up on my itunes and this time i actually started paying attention to lyrics, and it was kind of unsettling. the situation that plays out in the song is like straight out of some tarantino movie – the song would fit perfectly as well. this got me thinking of some other death related songs of that time period – teen angel, leader of the pack, tell laura i love her and such. nothing’s quite as beautifully morbid nowadays, it seems – our era has no james dean, no way to glorify dying young/leaving a good looking corpse. i was forwarded to this website to find out more dead teen songs, which is a good collection, but i wish that they left it to a certain time period. i shot a man in reno is a book that goes into detail about the culture of death as popularized in song, spanning from the 20s to the 90s. i haven’t read it yet – i just found out about it today – but looks interesante.

+ my new toy, a contax t2, and the film that’s been shot with it – mostly black & white. earlier this year i swore off all kodak film, but i’ve found that kodak is better outside of the usual kodak gold (portra, ektachrome), way more than the fuji stuff i’ve been using (velvia) – but fuji wins when it comes to bottom of the barrel 35mm (superia) and b&w (neopan).

+ i just recently signed up for netflix, finally. (“welcome to 1998″ i was told!) usually i’d leave it up to torrents to solve any of my movie fixes, but lately i’ve been wanting to watch older movies that aren’t so torrentable, and i think i’m tiring of my pirate ways. (arr no way matey) recent movies have been courage under fire, the client, and the general’s daughter. some left in queue are the firm, primal fear, a time to kill, and in the valley of elah. i’m on some kind of military and/or courtroom drama high, sans generals daughter though. the dialog in it is laughable, the whodunit storyline so mundane and predictable, and then to top it all off, the villain monologue (two of them! probably three!!) at the end to fully explain the movie if you weren’t paying attention the whole time. i’m truly sorry i rented that movie, or any john travolta movie to be quite honest. (well no, i liked hairspray..)

+ past few days in los angeles have been epic. it actually feels like fall. today would have been perfect for a picnic. therefore, ive compiled this months 8tracks playlist of songs to have a picnic to.

+ oh yeah, mailing list should work now. try it plz.
