dr. dre – zoom
zoom was off the bulworth soundtrack. i remember catching some of it off some movie channel.. warren beatty’s raps were super cringeworthy. i do remember the soundtrack way more though, and how ghetto superstar got SUUPER played out that particular summer. yuck. interesting – doing some research after i made this remix and i find this youtube, an unreleased version of zoom that has snoop in place of ll, and dawn robinson added in the mix as well. not too sure about her en vogue verses. but i also remember finding out recently that dawn robinson was on the hook on firm biz because i had seen the video for the first time. man its a sick vid though. anyway, digressing – the beat is a slum village track.
ryan leslie – addiction
i first heard this song from that youtube where he was in the studio jamming this beat out all by himself, on keys and vocals and drums. other than it being blatantly staged and produced/edited for viral youtube purposes, it was still pretty impressive. but more impressive was that he was in a coat and wearing sunglasses the whole time. i understand it must be his trademark look, but wouldn’t you wanna get comfortable when you tryin to work? i imagine he is rocking the coat and shades at all times: shopping at the supermarket, playing basketball, watering his garden, making balloon animals at a wedding. dapper. the beat is jungle brothers – brain.
dwele – i think i love you
i’ll admit, i don’t know much about dwele. except that he’s an upstandin dude who collaborates with some great people. i think the first i heard of his was possible, which is a really cute track in a similar vein to much of musiq soulchild’s lyrics. he also produces some of his own album tracks, which is mad cool. i’ve put him on some 9th wonder, which begs the question: whats up with a dwele and 9th wonder collabo? it would be buttah. (i’ll also take this time to say how much i love 9th wonder, his dream merchant v2 cd gets rewinds – its a slumper.)
tamia – so into you
i’ve been telling people that this song holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first mp3s i ever downloaded, but as i’ve jogged my memory more and more as of late, it’s no longer the case. i’m 98% sure that the first mp3 i ever had was either put your hands where my eyes can see or luv 2 luv u remix. iirc so into you came out around tenth grade, so i’d've(!) had a computer that could play mp3s already-before then i had a 486 that was not capable of such things, so, get this.. i downloaded wav files! and not whole songs, just snippets of them, but imagine waiting hours for an eleven megabyte file, which was only maybe minute or less. sheesh. i digress.
this song still holds a special place in my heart because i listened to it like, too much. something about it though still puts my hairs on end when hear i the intro piano. also, common’s faithful gives me the chills just as well – the part when its all piano and john legend, oooh i get weak at the knees. so when those two combine forces, i black out. visual aid if you don’t remember the video, man she was foine in it. remember she was in speed 2? god that movie was so bad (i hold the first one in very high regard) but i had to watch it because tamia was in it.
aaliyah – rock the boat
rock the boat was such a sexy video. it was directed by hype williams and filmed in the bahamas, in the abaco islands. that place looks amazing. im sure there was a lot of post/touching up to the footage, but the water looks so blue, sky so clear, clouds so epic. i must visit this place some time in life. and i miss aaliyah, a whole lot. my favorite aaliyah songs would have to be at your best, rock the boat, four page letter, if your girl only knew. beat is common’s be – yes it’s short, but it’s short and sweet.
edit:
aaliyah’s birthday is january sixteen. she would be thirty. caps has uploaded his aaliyah mix for today. also happy birthday duder.
beyonce – single ladies
ahhh the one yall been waiting for. during some stints of procrastination at school in the labs, i whipped this one up. i never even knew about the original until after the fact, and after that snl skit with jt doing the dance in heels (real good). the original isn’t even that cool, plus the breakdown part is really really ugly to listen to. however, the video to the song is mesmerizing. her hips like whoa. the choreo like whoa. the fact that she can keep up with her backup dancers, like whoa. i’m gonna learn that dance. but not like that one gay dude who does it all pro. the beat is talibs.
+ also, i did a version for benzi too, but it’s different from this one.
