mary j blige – be happy

with one comment

as part of a collaboration with soulbounce.com for their november project Month of Mary, celebrating her as an artist as well as the fifteen year anniversary of her cd, My Life. i was asked to whip something up for a remix ep they were going to put out for the culmination of the whole event. so, why not? they gave me a reason to mess with mary j blige acapellas and i was glad to oblige. mary j blige’s my life cd is a great representation of everything good about mid 90’s r&b. as i’m looking at the production credits on that cd right now, i just noticed that the title track was produced by trackmasters! more google sleuthing leads us to their production discography via wikipedia, and man. 94 to 97 was huge for them. don’t forget the remix appendage at the bottom of the list for more 90s heaters. THE LOUNGIN REMIX! dude, huge. anyway, getting sidetracked – the og track to this is without luv by 7 samurai.

mya – best of me

with 2 comments

mya mya mya. schoolboy crush and it ain’t on a hush, and i doubt i’m the only one. what’s she up to? other than seeing her in the hi hater video last year, i haven’t done much in the way of keeping tabs on (aka: stalking) her, so i’ve fully exhausted blogs/google/wikipedia and concluded she’s been up to a lot recently! other than her being on dancing with the stars, she just recently leaked a mixtape, beauty & the streets. her two previous albums never surfaced stateside, and have only been released in japan – the latter being produced under a japanese label even. her sixth album is currently in the works on her own independent label. makin moves girl. but enough about her in the now. what about mya with that north carolina jersey. mya with those volatile shoes(source! via neeks). mya with that dress-turned-into-skirt, damn. and, well duh, she can hella dance(via ritzy). the beat to this is slum village – selfish.

she will be turning thirty on oct. 10 – YGG! WIT YO FINE ASS!

dr. dre – zoom

with one comment

zoom was off the bulworth soundtrack. i remember catching some of it off some movie channel.. warren beatty’s raps were super cringeworthy. i do remember the soundtrack way more though, and how ghetto superstar got SUUPER played out that particular summer. yuck. interesting – doing some research after i made this remix and i find this youtube, an unreleased version of zoom that has snoop in place of ll, and dawn robinson added in the mix as well. not too sure about her en vogue verses. but i also remember finding out recently that dawn robinson was on the hook on firm biz because i had seen the video for the first time. man its a sick vid though. anyway, digressing – the beat is a slum village track.

ryan leslie – addiction

with 9 comments

i first heard this song from that youtube where he was in the studio jamming this beat out all by himself, on keys and vocals and drums. other than it being blatantly staged and produced/edited for viral youtube purposes, it was still pretty impressive. but more impressive was that he was in a coat and wearing sunglasses the whole time. i understand it must be his trademark look, but wouldn’t you wanna get comfortable when you tryin to work? i imagine he is rocking the coat and shades at all times: shopping at the supermarket, playing basketball, watering his garden, making balloon animals at a wedding. dapper. the beat is jungle brothers – brain.

dwele – i think i love you

with 2 comments

i’ll admit, i don’t know much about dwele. except that he’s an upstandin dude who collaborates with some great people. i think the first i heard of his was possible, which is a really cute track in a similar vein to much of musiq soulchild’s lyrics. he also produces some of his own album tracks, which is mad cool. i’ve put him on some 9th wonder, which begs the question: whats up with a dwele and 9th wonder collabo? it would be buttah. (i’ll also take this time to say how much i love 9th wonder, his dream merchant v2 cd gets rewinds – its a slumper.)

tamia – so into you

with 2 comments

i’ve been telling people that this song holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first mp3s i ever downloaded, but as i’ve jogged my memory more and more as of late, it’s no longer the case. i’m 98% sure that the first mp3 i ever had was either put your hands where my eyes can see or luv 2 luv u remix. iirc so into you came out around tenth grade, so i’d've(!) had a computer that could play mp3s already-before then i had a 486 that was not capable of such things, so, get this.. i downloaded wav files! and not whole songs, just snippets of them, but imagine waiting hours for an eleven megabyte file, which was only maybe minute or less. sheesh. i digress.

this song still holds a special place in my heart because i listened to it like, too much. something about it though still puts my hairs on end when hear i the intro piano. also, common’s faithful gives me the chills just as well – the part when its all piano and john legend, oooh i get weak at the knees. so when those two combine forces, i black out. visual aid if you don’t remember the video, man she was foine in it. remember she was in speed 2? god that movie was so bad (i hold the first one in very high regard) but i had to watch it because tamia was in it.
