i just wanna
you like what you see
I sort my music mainly by BPM first then everything else later, mostly for the sake of mixing, and I’ve noticed that whenever I’m djing, I’m usually not in the 110 bpm hood – I’ll stick to 88-97 and 120s. Most stuff in the 100-110 hood that I have is new jack; I don’t think I have much other 110ish stuff, and I’m wondering if it’s just me? I tried to fix that with this quick mix. Mostly, it was just a reason to put that Ryan Leslie track in a mix. I’m obsessin over it.

This month’s throwback track of the week (throwback track of the week of the month?) is Nas – You Owe Me, with my favorite kind of Timbaland – mid to late 90s Timbaland. Pure gold, most of the tracks he was producing. Ten years ago, this song reached its chart peak at 13 and was hanging around on the charts for 24 weeks. Good job!
+ Themixtapeclub has a new offering for February, and i’m really feelin the chairperson‘s tape. Back in January I had my own tape up, it’s a love thing, which was a selection of old funky slowjams. Though now that January is done, you can no longer listen to it on site – not to worry as I’ve done the uploading and mirroring for you! For your enjoyment (and quite apropos for sunday’s fond festivities, if hearts and roses are your kinda thing):

+ The announcement of a Daria: The Complete Animated Series box set has brought much joy in the past few days. I remember vegetating on the couch certain weekends watching daria marathons as a kid. And as i’ve been watching a bunch of youtube clips of Daria episodes lately, I’m being reminded of how great the writing was/is. Not to mention all the background audio they’d use in that show, REAL good selection. So much so that people have taken time to document the songs used in each episode. However I heard a rumor that the dvd won’t have all the music because of liscensing issues – but that’s like the best part!?!!? I surely hope the songs stay in tact.

calque part two
hahah, i was looking at the post for the original calque and i had to double take, because i swear to god i made that much more recently. though i might be getting it mixed up with the other house mix i did, which, coincidentally, was done around the same time of the year as well! maybe october and november just mean i’m in a housish mood. well, this one is all good vibin house with some deep house as well. it’s not a sequel per se, but moreso the illegitimate child of calque and in the air. but i do believe i will be doing sequels for other old mixes as well.. mainly because i already like all the names of the mixes ive made!

when i look at you
i grew up with a very healthy bossa-nova influence. on any given weekend, my dad might have been so inclined to bump some stan getz, astrud gilberto, sergio mendes, and/or mongo santamaria. my fondest memories would be cleaning the house with this playing loudly from the living room, all of us singing in unison. well atleast mom and dad were singin it, i was just thinkin it. my dad has a lot of it on cd, and when we went to the philippines he brought some vinyl back, which was way cool. however i’ve also found my fair share of brazilian vinyl just from salvation army digging (thriftstore archaeologist™) to add to my collection. it also makes me feel like a real life grown up when i listen to it. like i should be listening to this music while having cachaça and talking about politics, south american of course.
i hope this mix brings out the sun, because l.a.(LAKESHOW!) has been absolutely dreary lately. actually right now though the afternoon sun is making great shadows, let’s just hope that the june gloom is on its way out. also: bonus ciara remix at the end.

veleidoso
aptly titled because i’m venting about socal weather lately. it doesn’t know what to make of itself. one day its 90, the next its cloudy and drizzling, then cold, then hot, then cloudy, blah blah ad infinitum. i haven’t washed my car in months, and i don’t even know if i should still! (i’m just being lazy, really) but not just the weather being indecisive, i’ve been just super picky with music lately. when i start making mixes i’ll pick songs and add them to a playlist to review later on; i think i’d made atleast six different playlists for this upcoming mix. in fact a few of them i’d gotten pretty far in before i just gave up and got sick of it. i don’t know what’s up, just being difficult with myself. anyway, enjoy this cloudy-then-sunny mix.

i found my old sony walkman from when i was a kid. it kinda blew me away that it was still in good condition and with a working tape deck, so i proceeded to ransack my parents house for old tapes, in hopes of finding some of my old radio mixtapes i’d created. everyone did that, right? i would record so much and so frequently that i would grab a song and sleep on it then the next day record the same exact song, without even realizing it. (double your pleasure, double your fun) i would record all the mixes off of power106 or 92.3 the beat, i would record the commercials as well (I GOT A FRUITOPIA CAP!) and get all crazy with the editing too. alas, i didn’t find any of those tapes, probably long gone in some salvation army bin or recorded over. le sigh. (i used to have some talkboy tapes where me and my brother pretended to be news anchors, also gone with the wind) however i did find like a slowjam tape, a mariah tape, the ini kamoze single on tape, and blackstar. decent finds, but could have been way better.
this tape throwback has put me into a 90s mood, a 90s house mood – especially when power started playing all their deep house. i used to hate it, but now those tracks are creeping up out of my subconscious and i really want/wanted to hear them again. a bit of creative googling brought me to richard humpty vission’s website – one of the djs at power who’d been there for a long time when i was a kid – and someone on his forum has uploaded a massive collection of recorded power mixes from the 90s. i started digging through them and found some really hot shit that made me go oh shit. since its on the richard humpty vission site it’s mostly focused on house but some of the early 90s stuff you’ll get the hip hop mixes in it too. either way a great find, if you are from l.a. and wanna relive those days.
here’s a house mix. lots of vocal and latin-influenced grooves, of which i’m all about.
